CYLINDRICAL MIRROR OF VARIABLE CURVATURE

optics

Description of the device

The device demonstrates the law of light reflection, light reflection from curved surfaces, image created with concave and convex cylindrical mirror, virtual and real images.

Phenomenon

The mirrors have surfaces with variable radius of curvature – they’re not flat but curved according to a specific pattern. This results in a distorted image that you see. One of the mirrors slims and lengthens your silhouette, the other magnifies the image when you are close to it and turns the image 180 degrees when you stand farther away from it.

How to use it

Stand in front of the mirror. Notice how the reflection changes when you get closer to and farther away from the mirror. Do the same while standing on the other (concave) side of the mirror.
