STONE DULCIMER

acoustics

Description of the device

A dulcimer is a lithophone – a musical instrument that belongs to the group of percussion instruments or so-called struck idiophones. Sounds are produced by striking the stone bars that vary in sizes and forms.

Phenomenon

Striking the stone causes its vibrations. Those vibrations are the source of an acoustic wave that spreads in the air and reaches your ears. The smaller the stone, the higher the sound it produces.

How to use it

Strike the stone bars one after another. Listen to how they sound. Examine how the sound is determined by spot you hit. Try to find a connection between the size of the stone bars and the pitch of produced sounds.
