ECHO CHAMBER

acoustics

Description of the device

The chamber allows to examine a beat phenomenon. By changing the pitch and intensity of the sound, you can get various results.

Phenomenon

A beat is a phenomenon that occurs when two sound waves of identical amplitudes and slightly different frequencies spreading in the same direction interfere with each other. A resultant wave which frequency is an average of superposing wave’s frequencies, changes periodically according to the formula: echo wave = wave 2 – wave 1.

Periodical variation of resultant wave’s amplitude is perceived as a changing sound that gets louder and quieter alternately.

How to use it

Stand close to the device. Put your head inside the round chamber and start humming. Try to adjust the pitch of the sound.
