SOUND FOCUSING

acoustics

Description of the device

When you speak, the sounds that you make spread through the air as sound waves. It turns out that when you and your friend are facing the antennas, you can talk to each other – even whisper.

Phenomenon

The antenna that you’re facing reflects the sound waves directed at it while talking. The waves are then transmitted to the other antenna, which parabolic shape allows to further focus the waves. If your ear is placed in the focus point – you can hear an amplified sound.

How to use it

This experiment requires two people. Each of you should stand near a parabolic antenna, exactly where the feet are painted on the ground. Try talking while facing each other. Then turn away from each other, face the antennas and try talking again.
